Dani Wagner

To celebrate the release of our new fall/winter cover featuring artwork by Dani Wagner, we thought we’d talk to the talented young artist and share her story.

What is your background? Did you formally train somewhere? How long have you been painting and illustrating?

Dani: I have been drawing and painting ever since I could remember. I have been surrounded by a family of artists my whole life whether it be fine art or music. I have taken art classes in school, but never really had any formal training until college at the University of Delaware. I got my degree in Apparel Design, but I minored in Fine Art so I was able to take a few art classes such as painting and printmaking.

Where do you feel most inspired?

D: I feel most inspired when I am traveling. When I am in a new place I love to explore, but always feel a little vulnerable. I think this combination allows me to open up and be more creative.

How did you choose the color palette for the work on the cover? How did you arrive at its concept?

D: For the color palette, I worked with the art director pulling from some inspiration images and incorporating colors that were going to be used in the cake as well. We decided on brights, but applied softly, more like a watercolor. And of course like all of my paintings, I had to incorporate a little metallic gold and some tonal embroidery.

Describe the process for your painted work. Does it differ depending on the subject (i.e. landscapes / portraits / abstract pieces)?

D: The process for my painted work definitely depends on the subject matter. For abstract work I usually start with some sort of inspiration and brainstorm. This begins by choosing a color palette, medium, and the in which I want to apply the paint/medium. I also try to in vision the space where this piece may be too. As for portraiture/realistic paintings I have more of an aggressive approach, and I usually try not to plan. I think it is easier sometimes to just start painting, then to over think it.

On the Edge

Is there an artist who has influenced you?

D: I would have to say my mom and my grandfather have influenced me the most. I grew up watching them paint/illustrate. I think my work now reflects a little bit of both of their styles.
