How You Met: We met at a bar in Hanover called Cancun Cantina, where we had both been going for a couple years. We had seen each other there several times but never spoken until July 2012 when Kelly sparked up a conversation. A week or so later, we were dating and before we knew it, we were in love!

The Engagement: Our engagement was unique and it’s kind of a long story so, Kelly will try to abbreviate as much as possible. Rick had planned to propose while they were on vacation at Kelly’s parents Florida house. So, about a month prior, he called her mom and dad for their blessing, which they were all to happy to give. At that time, he hadn’t planned out any details so he consulted her mom for help. Her parents do a lot of business with the Neiman Marcus at the Boca Town Center in Florida and they have made several wonderful friends there over the past years. Her mom was having lunch with some of those friends when Rick called her and they immediately suggested he propose there in the store. Rick was all for it so, they set everything up. On March 6, 2014, they headed over to Neiman Marcus for a visit. They had set up a luncheon in the Precious Jewelry Dept, which Kelly thought was something they did for her parents. They were taken to a back room, where they had prepared a table for five. They all sat down, nibbling on appetizers and talking casually, when Rick put his hand on hers and said “Babe, you know I love . . . you know you’re my best friend.” Kelly was expecting him to make a joke or something but he stood up and pulled a box out of his pocket. He was shaking, she was still in shock. He got down on one knee and opened the box, revealing a gorgeous heart-shaped diamond ring, which he had picked out himself (he had a little help from her brother too). Then he asked Kelly to marry him and, of course, she said yes! It was all hugs and tears (and spit-up, lol, their son was just 6 months old at the time) after that, as everyone came in to congratulate them. They had a champaign toast presented by their wonderful friends at Neiman’s and by the time we got back to the house, Kelly’s cheeks hurt from smiling so much.

Wedding Design Inspiration: They wanted to do something that was unique, unexpected, and memorable for everyone and the first thing that came to mind was Alice in Wonderland. Kelly loves the stories and movies and, thought it would be awesome to have a Wonderland Mad Tea Party wedding. Rick was a little hesitant at first but she promised they could do it in a way that wasn’t childish or over the top. Eventually, he grew to love the idea as much as she did.

What was Unique and Special about your Wedding: Everything about their wedding was unique and special 🙂 Their ceremony was very classic, with Irish undertones. Rick wore his Class A uniform and they had Celtic music played by a string trio. The reception was not what you would call traditional and they kept the theme a secret. The guests were completely surprised when they left cocktail hour in the Carriage House and went straight down the rabbit hole for a mad tea party!

Favorite Details: There were so many amazing details, it’s difficult to pick just a few. Kelly’s dress was an AMAZING custom-made gown that fit like a glove. They did a Celtic Knot tying during the ceremony, as well as sand-pouring, in which they included their 18-month old son. The reception theme was a great surprise for their guests and the Gramercy Mansion and grounds were the perfect setting. They had a photo booth set up with Alice in Wonderland props and an original, Wonderland-inspired 8′ x 10′ hand-painted mural as the backdrop. All of the food stations were named after characters from the Wonderland story and featured corresponding, signature cocktails. The tables were numbered with playing cards and adorned with mismatched china, linens, lace and glassware and the the ceiling above was covered with giant, hanging paper flowers. The dance floor looked like a giant chessboard and there were jumbo sized playing cards and mushrooms under the tent outside, marking the path to the lounge area where we had a hookah! The cake was a four-layer masterpiece of Wonderland-inspired artistry, topped off with a Mad Hatter hat and surrounded by “take me” and “eat me” cookies and cakes.

Most Unexpected Event on the Day of the Wedding: Their wedding planner, who was eight months pregnant, wasn’t feeling well and had to leave just before the ceremony started. (She ended up going to the hospital and had her baby the next day!) Even though she wasn’t there for the whole day, everything went as planned. Her assistants were excellent!

Piece of Advice: Hire a wedding planner, even if it takes a big chunk of your budget. It is well worth the cost just to be able to relax a little and enjoy the experience of planning your wedding.
