Lyn Meyerhoff and Sami Topolski went to prom together. And then, as young angsty love goes, there was a breakup when Sami headed back to Frostburg State University as a sophomore and Lyn started her first year of college. For Lyn, there were tears followed by heartache and maybe a grudge. After college, Lyn was back in Baltimore, about to head to Montana State University for a master’s program. While running last-minute errands for her move, a detour forced her down a road she didn’t normally take. And even though she was still angry about how things had ended, she suddenly found herself thinking about Sami who lived nearby. At a light, she picked up her phone to text Sami when, all of a sudden, a text popped up: “I’m driving behind you.” It was Sami. Letting fate guide them, the two spent the next six days rekindling their relationship. “The ultimate test was if my dog liked her,” says Lyn. “She hates everyone but Sami. And that was pretty much it.”
Planning their wedding was easy. “We luckily have really similar tastes,” says Sami, and the two settled on a theme: a whimsical midsummers night’s dream, with long tables draped with lace runners and Edison lights hanging above. In their vows, Sami talked about their relationship. “I see Lyn in colors, and they are colors that make me happy,” she read. They both signed a ketubah, a Jewish marriage contract, which was handmade in Israel by Danny Azoulay, who specializes in paper-cut ketubahs. He changed the text for them, making it more egalitarian, less patriarchal, and appropriate for two women. “We felt so honored to be married,” says Lyn. After the wedding, they headed back to the hotel with their friends to eat pizza. Most were high-school friends who had been at that senior prom. “Everyone who was there wanted to be there and supported us,” says Sami. “We felt so lucky.”
