This originally ran as The Moment in the 2022 issue.
On the day of our elopement we woke up, a little later than usual, at the Hotel Revival and walked around Mount Vernon. The weather was perfect, and later, we enjoyed a picnic at one of our favorite spots—the Patapsco Female Institute in Ellicott City—where we had taken our engagement photos. In July 2020, we decided to postpone our big celebration, and soon after, decided to have a private ceremony for just us. I’m a physician and had been caring for COVID-19 patients since the pandemic started. With all the chaos of 2020, it was a bright light—celebrating our relationship and resilience as a couple. Our favorite moments included sharing private vows, dancing in the woods, and indulging in a sunset picnic with Popeyes fried chicken and a matcha cake. But the best part was knowing that we got to have this day just to ourselves.
