Diana Farmer and Spencer Adams met and instantly hit it off in a wildlife conservation class at the University of Delaware, and soon after Diana realized they had another connection.
“I woke up in the middle of a Wednesday night, disrupted by loud singing across the street,” she recalls. “After struggling to fall back asleep, and with an 8 a.m. class in the morning, I went to ask the neighbors to stop singing and playing instruments on their porch.” This being a college town, they instead invited her for a beer. And then through small talk she discovered the fun-loving group were Spencer’s friends from his hometown of Milford.
Diana started hanging out with the “friends from home” and eventually Spencer and Diana divulged their feelings for each other over texts after a party. The year after graduating, Diana received a job offer in Towson and moved to Mount Vernon and Spencer followed a few months later.
When it was time to get engaged, Spencer, a project manager at an engineering firm, decided to propose to Diana while they were visiting her grandmother in Atlanta. “It meant a lot to me that he included my grandmother in this special occasion, and it was so unexpected,” says Diana, who works for a global environmental nonprofit.
They quickly fell in love with Evergreen Museum & Library and the elegant grounds and Diana’s own garden served as inspiration for the 150-person wedding. “Gardening has become a major source of relaxation, beauty, and inspiration,” says Diana. “Our overall wedding design started with my favorite dahlias and cosmos in shades of orange and pink.”
Because flowers are so important to her, Diana worked closely with her florist, Violet Florals, for the bouquets and ceremony flowers. “They were just stunning,” she says. “I almost cried when I saw the arrangements.” Diana herself created about 30 vases for the reception—sourcing locally from Butterbee Farm and her very own garden, including those dahlias, cosmos, and celosia.
The night ended with one of the flower girls adorably crashing their private cake-cutting and Spencer performing “I’ll Be Your Mirror” by Lou Reed (one of her favorite songs) with some of his groomsmen backing him up.
“We never cared a lot about getting married,” says Diana. “So for us it became a way to throw a great party for our loved ones, but it was all of their love and support that made the day so special in the end.”
