This originally ran in the 2021 issue as The Moment.
At 3:30 p.m. on March 30, 2020, with our original wedding date canceled, a statewide lockdown due to COVID-19 looming, and the weighty uncertainty of when we could have a wedding, we made an impromptu decision to get married on the spot. Adam and I had everything we needed: the dress, the suit, a sibling who had gotten ordained online in case of emergency, a wedding photographer willing to be there on short notice—and each other. At 5 p.m., we walked two blocks from our apartment in Mount Vernon to the Washington Monument. With our family tuned in virtually and our attendees—my brother, our photographer, Rachel, and anyone else who happened to be walking by—responsibly distanced, we got married. It was perfect. – MARRIED MARCH 30, 2020, AT THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT IN MOUNT VERNON
