The Engagement Knowing Yvonne would be difficult to surprise, Dominic “Nic” enlisted the help of Yvonne’s best friend, Gina. Over the course of several months, Gina casually mentioned that she had an acquaintance who was opening a new restaurant and wanted to host a menu-tasting on the rooftop of a local hotel. The week of the event, Gina invited Yvonne as her plus-one, claiming that her date had canceled on her. When Yvonne arrived at sunset on the rooftop of the Graduate Hotel in downtown Richmond, Virginia, she was shocked to find that there was no restaurant opening. Instead, Nic was waiting there with a display of candles, flowers, cold sparks, and champagne. He even hired a photographer to capture the moment! Yvonne had no idea that when Nic left on a “work trip” earlier that day, he had actually driven straight to the Graduate Hotel and spent the day setting up the surprise with Gina and Nic’s close friend, Iain.

Wedding Design Inspiration When crafting the design of their wedding, Yvonne and Nic took inspiration from the George Peabody Library itself. The concept of a “candlelit library” became the focal point through which Yvonne and Nic would design the event. Every detail was chosen to echo the Peabody’s old-world romance and grandeur. They made sure to incorporate elements from the Gilded Age (during which the Peabody was built) as a nod to the venue’s rich history and worked with their wedding team to craft a night that felt like stepping back in time. It was important to Yvonne and Nic that each decision made about their wedding day was intentional, cohesive, and authentic to them.

What Was Unique and Special About Your Wedding Day As two former English majors and avid readers, being able to say that they got married in a library is a dream come true!

Favorite Details All of the food! But most notably: the oyster bar at cocktail hour, gelato for dessert, and a French fry station for a late-night snack. The bridal getting ready suite at the Ulysses Hotel, which had a vintage bathtub in the very middle of the room. On their wedding morning, Yvonne gifted Nic a personalized version of his favorite book, Wuthering Heights, incorporating elements from their relationship into the cover art. Nic gave Yvonne an engraved jewelry box that plays their first dance song when opened. The heartfelt wedding toasts given by Nic’s father and Yvonne’s bridesmaid, Gina.

Most Unexpected Event On Your Wedding Day Yvonne and Nic surprised their guests by bringing out drummers for a live performance and to open up the dance floor. The couple had been keeping this secret for months and their guests certainly didn’t expect to watch a drum show in a library!

Piece of Advice Embrace the little mishaps. They often become the most memorable moments!
